. >>> we begin the broadcast with a shooting in newtown, connecticut. 90 minutes of new york city. >> all the new details. >> mandy, the shooting happened this morning just after 9:30. that's when police got a 911 call. connecticut state police officials say that on and off duty officers reported to the school. they immediately began a search and an evacuation of the school. the shooter was found on scene deceased inside the building. as you mentioned, 18 children and 8 adults among those killed. the shooter as well also dead. officials tell nbc news a second person is in custody, wanted for questioning with relation to this shooting. officials have not confirmed those numbers saying that they are still notifying next of kin. the white house was notified this morning of the shooting and said like so many parents everywhere today, their hearts go out and they feel enormous, enormous sympathy to what the parents here and this community are going through. >> absolutely. it's completely tragic. thank you very much for the update. we will continue to monitor the situation as the developments u

'd like to say, that i think all of our hearts and prayers are with the families in newtown, connecticut. as a father, i cannot even imagine the utter horror that those families are going through right now, grieving the loss of their children and their loved ones. as far as the fiscal cliff is concerned, as the speaker has said, we remain committed to trying to minimize the impact on hard-working families and small businesses in this country, as far as tax increases are concerned. we look to find the answer to solve the problem on the spending issue here in washington. the president is not yet there. he has not come to where he needs to be in order for us to push through a bill that really does begin to address the problem. and as the speaker said, that's why we are now discussing an alternative plan, if the president and the white house cannot come our way. thank you. >> as the speaker and the leader said, we've been trying to make sure we do not go off this fiscal cliff. but at the same time, put america on a different path. one for job creation, one that also takes care of our spendin

have a newtown, connecticut facility. >> we do. we have about 400 associate there is and it really has been traumatic. last night we had a memorial service, 3,500 local people game from newtown, from danbury. it is a tragedy. many of our associates live in newtown, we have a major facility there and it just shows the fragility of life and i can speak as a parent that if you lose a child, nothing else matters. >> now, if someone wants to help, was there an organization that you would recommend that people help? >> they have set up a special section in the united way in danbury. and if you connect the united way danbury, they have an area where you can send funds and they're doing a lot of good work. >> okay. now your company itself has been pretty socially responsible. an issue that i thought was important is fuel, the footprint that your company has and how important this is to you. zero fuel now you use? >> it really is. it's a remarkable situation that we have, you know, we are an integrated company. we have operations in vermont and vermont can go minus 14 in winter and this year we

to try to present to people. first of all, there's an assault weapons ban in connecticut to start with. secondly, a killer like this, a man who's as demented as this man was andbrilliant as he was, he's going to find away to do it with weapons. kn not with weapons, he'll do it with bombs and other weapons. i see why you can't have a reasonable restriction on assault weapons. i'm perfectly okay with that. i'm not okayky trying to prevent a simplistic answer. this is about mental health. our ability to track people, incarcerate people who harry mentally ill. about our ability to understand why they're acting the way they're acting, stricter law enforcement in those areas. you another, new york city has very low crime. we have very strict gun control in new york city. chicago has very high murder rate. they have the same strict gun control in chicago. i never thought it was about gun control. in and of itself, gun control meaning assault weapons control is worth taking a good look at, but the way the president is presenting this, he's going to run into problems with his own democrats who

across connecticut, rhode island, boston. we could see maybe one, maybe even two inches of rain, snow continues with cold air coming around. we are still watching more snow and then we get the great lakes involved and as well. dumping more snow in western new york. and by that time, new york city, you might see a few flurries. the worst of it is gone for you except the wind but now northern new england, parts of it, maine corks see a foot plus the snow coming through there. all of this, rain, the wind and snow, that will impact travel. as we head lou tonight some of the worst airports this evening will be around d.c. and as well as philadelphia and new york, numerous delays. hundreds of cancelations of pilots and usually -- about a would-hour delay is average around the new york city airports tonight. and even with the snow back on towards the west. now tomorrow, new york city is -- improving throughout the afternoon but morning pilots cog still be delayed and big-time delays continue there in boston and again, things will improve as we head towards friday and then we wait for a next

, connecticut. our words can do little to ease your pain. but you know this. we are with you in this incredible difficult time. and recognize that you are who we are thinking about, even as we try to focus on our work today. so as for the markets, it was another weak day. dow dipped 36 points. s&p gave up .41%. nasdaq declined .70. a lot of that again because of apple. you know the drill as we head into the weekend. i'm not expecting to hear any progress on the fiscal cliff. but you know, i always watch the sunday morning talk shows now very closely and i'm looking for some politicians saying something encouraging. what does encouraging mean? it means a republican uttering the two words tax increase without the word no before it. and the democrats uttering two words, spending cuts, without the word no before them. neither seems to be able to pull off that syntax, though. at this point i think we've got to assume that the washington people, they can't get it together. we've got to gird ourselves for a cliff, make sure that we understand what the dive will look like, and focus on things that are

, the fiscal cliff, newtown, connecticut, what happened up there, that's the gem feeling overall. jcpenney, they've had promotions walking away from it every day, low discount price story. oppenheimer noted discount racks had been cleared and the traffic seems to have improved in that store. maybe that change in their philosophy has helped them out. that's a note that was out on oppenheimer today. bottom line here, guys, is i think we are seeing some movement with some companies to deal with some of these retail sales issues. you'll see a lot of pressure on margins. david, i think you mentioned this, about what was going on with inflows and outflows from equity mutual funds. it's true we're continuing to get outflows from equity mutual funds. that's certainly been disappointing. we had it going through up until last week. the end of last week, it was reported the first outflows from treasuries. more specifically, from general bond funds. that's the first time we've seen this in a very, very long time. all right, it was a very small number, something on the order of $1 billion or something
